can any one refer me to a good dealer or place to find a fairly inexepensive used compact tractor in the east bay area (california) or Stocton? or an individual? I'm not real particular on brand, looking mainly for mowing, rototilling, and light moving of soil.

I'm in Northern California, Shingle Springs, 'bout 30 minutes east of Sacramento.
I bought my tractor at Gold country Kubota in Auburn. That's a little out of your way(good folks though!). I don't have the number handy, not in our book either...
Sacramento Ford carries Kubota and New Holland(916-454-4444).
Dolk Tractor in Rio Vista advertises Kubota(707-374-6438).
One of those should be able to point you in the right direction. ....

I came to this board new to tractors and got all sorts of help by reading a lot and asking a few questions. Always tried to help myself as much as I could before asking. Always figured that finding a dealer was my responsibility. I intend this as a gentle nudge that maybe will get you more responses. Figure I can do so since I'm a native son.

thanks Tom, I agree finding a dealer should be my responsibility, what I was looking for was like I replied to Robert, a prefered dealer that might come up from some one who has been through this process before me, I like to learn from others experiences as much as my own. thanks again

My family was on the central coast in SLO and Paso Robles until about 5 years ago. Might have been able to come up with some dealers, but probably wouldn't much about any. My family were retired farmers from the Nebraska dust bowl days by the time they got to California. Happy you got enough information.
Yikes, 11 generations. I thought I was only ever two generations in a spot. After years in Canada, I discovered by accident that my family goes back many generations in Canada, and I was living less than 100 miles from the old homestead. Belonging to a place does put a whole different perspective on things.

Tom,
I know San Luis and Paso very well, graduated from Calp Poly, went skiing at Naciamento usually 2-3 times a week. love the area, but had to move to where the work is in Engineering, the bay area. My folks now live on the original homestead behind Lopez Lake if you are familiar with that(east of arroyo grande) small world!

Yep, that's the rap on San Luis. Great place to live--especially if you're not looking for a job. My folks retired there so they didn't have to worry. I looked, but ended up in L.A. for a year after I got out of the service. I'm sure that living in L.A. made me want to buy a tractor, even if it was 25 years later.
Don't imagine there's a lot of tractor stuff in SLO. Probably more in Paso with all the orchards or Santa Maria with the gardens and flowers. As I remember, there's more ranches than crops around SLO.
Been by Lopez Lake a few times. The last time, there was serious water rationing in SLO and the water level was very low. Guess there have been some wet years since then. Good country around there. Very different than the Northern Ontario forests I've gotten used too. ....

morning Tom,
yes - it's changed a tremendous amount, I visit my folks every couple months and I am amazed at how different everything is, lots of growth, more vieyards than crops now, a few tractor dealers, but your right - Paso and Santa Maria are better bets, still too far from me. ....
